Teach Stephen King How to Write Horror

I recently updated the book description for my "The 100 Calorie Diet Plan" on Amazon HERE and then did a bit of tweeting about it as soon as the Amazon approval process was complete and it went live with the edits in place. Within minutes of one of my tweets I got this excellent example of a Bot run amok. I thought it was hilarious that I would get an offer like that. Obviously any rational being would see in my profiles that I've lost 60 pounds and kept it off for 4 years now through hard cardio, weight training, and diet, including the exact same diet as in the book. Statements tweeted from the book description on Amazon: Imagine a food portion control system so easy a 5th grader can do the math and weigh out the portions. Imagine yourself achieving your fat loss goals in 12 short weeks using that plan. Imagine a food portion plan that doesn't require that you eliminate any of your favorite foods. Imagine no more, because this is that plan. ...

Twitter Fan Offers Book Review

I love it when I get an honest review of any of my books and articles, regardless of source. I've been running a survey the last few days to figure out what you, my readers, think should be the best title for my upcoming training manual for hiking, trekking, and mountaineering. CLICK HERE if you want to offer your opinion. So far the response has been amazing and pointed out so many options I hadn't considered. So a great big thank you to all! Anyway, I posted a link to the survey on Twitter, and apparently attracted the attention of a young twitter aficionado of #hiking who is known to not fall into any of the following groups: Email Subscriber from Seven Summits Body Downloader of the 2013 beta edition "Couch to Colorado 14er" Subscriber to the "Mountaineering Fitness" training program So apparently if they've read any of the available versions previous to July 2014 it was obtained by a file sharing site. I say this only to point out the...

I gave away more books in two days than I sold in the entire year

Over time I had removed all of my books from Amazon KDP Select. That means that those books can't participate in: Kindle Countdown Deal Kindle Free Promotion Prime Lending Library I'd read a lot of articles going over the pros and cons of KDP Select, most of which end up by saying Enroll in KDP Select for the awesomeness Here we have some cons: Exclusivity to Amazon Countdown Deal and Free Promotion cannot be done in same enrollment cycle Countdown Deal and Free Promotion according to strict days per cycle The teaser of Countdown Deal is probably the most lucrative. Supposedly Amazon puts your book on a list of all the other 3,451 books currently on the Countdown Deal to push your book and market it for you. For many books this might be the only marketing it ever receives.  The Free Promotion of course is purely to generate some interest and stats so you can wave a flag and say My book was #43,329 in Kindle Books for an hour and a half! For...

A Matter of Magnitude - fun with statistics

Sometimes a statistic can be toyed with a bit to illustrate a point. Here's an example. In spite of all the safety locks and procedures and requirements, the probability that you will die in any single roller coaster ride has not varied by even 1% in the last 50 years. If you were to say that to a roller coaster designer I'm sure they would fight about it quite vehemently, quoting various alternative statistics and engineering feats of wonder. You might not be able to get a word in edgewise to explain it to them. But the simple fact remains, the above statement is completely and totally factual. Let me explain. At no time in the last 50 years has there ever been: a zero percent (0%) chance of death in any one roller coaster ride a one percent (1%) chance of death in any one roller coaster ride The median is of course .5%. Assuming something between 0% and 1% for the average probability of death from any one roller coaster ride, then it has not varied by more than 1...

iBook Store and Personal Publishing

There used to be a loophole for PDF uploads in the iBook Store. A few of my fans on Seven Summits Quest Facebook asked if I could provide my books in iPad format so I went through a near-exhaustive process of signing up as a publisher in the iBook Store. This was a pretty serious undertaking. B&N was the easiest to sign up for. Amazon was fairly simple. Apple was a long complicated process of bank and ID verification. After over a month of that, I finally was ready to publish. There was no way to publish. I dug all over the place, and apparently the PDF loophole was closed. Uploading wasn't possible, even for properly formatted and converted ebooks. Frost covered leaf The only way to do it on your own as a publisher was to buy a relatively expensive new computer and install their free software and rewrite the book in that software. The second option was to hire one of their preferred providers to do all that for you. For a fee. In both cases though it was expensive eno...

Elbrus Race 2013 - ebook publishing on Kindle and Nook

I've finished writing the ebook "Elbrus Race 2013" about the adventure race in Russia that I and Todd Gilles, national figure skating champion, competed in. It was great fun in spite of the whiteout along the course between cliffs and crevasses. When the book is live, presumably tomorrow, I'll put up links for you to buy it. Post by Seven Summits Quest .
